Coincidentally, Aidan Turner previously filmed at Chavenage House (The Priory in Rivals)
Narrative
It follows Rupert Campbell-Black and Tony Baddingham as their long-running rivalry comes to a head. The same location was used to depict Trenwith House in the 2015 BBC TV adaptation of Poldark. There was a terrible version of Riders by Jilly Cooper in the 90s, and since then TV has avoided ‘bonkbusters’.
Critics have found Jilly Cooper’s novels dated and silly
Cooper is far from being the truth in his ironic satire of the Cotswolds upper middle class, and has always had a knack for comedy, characters and entertaining plots. In many ways, his work has been more akin to Restoration comedy than Carry On, with characters showing more development and inner life than you might expect. Now from Disney comes RIVALS with a brilliant cast, and the good news is this: it’s a great watch, yes, full of bad moments, badasses, and bums, even the occasional Willy.
He does a truly commendable job
Its triumph, though, is that it has the budget and time to do justice to the spirit and spirit of the original book. The changes are minor and actually open up the period and politics more. Bella Maclean is brilliant in the central role of Tagie, and Alex Hassel does a great job as Rupert, an impossible role since no one in history could be the character that Cooper has created—part villain, part Adonis, part whiny kid.
I really liked it
The real star of this, though, is the ensemble cast of fine character actors Emily Atack, Danny Dyer, Katherine Parkinson, who give some of the best performances of their careers. A real triumph for Disney. It’s fun, it’s bubbly, but there’s a deeper undercurrent that elevates it above a typical film and gives us hope that we’ll see more from this team and universe in the future.
